May have been bomb, Russian train crash kills 22

Monday, December 7, 2009

Twenty-two people were killed and dozens more injured in a Russian train crash on Friday, Russian news agencies said, and one source suggested it could have been caused by a bomb.

Four carriages of the train travelling from Moscow to St Petersburg were derailed at 9:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) near the town of Bologoye some 350 km (200 miles) from Moscow.

"A one metre-diameter hole has been found next to the railway track. Witnesses heard a loud slap before the accident. All of this could point to a possible act of terrorism," Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed source in Moscow`s law enforcement agencies as saying.

Itar-Tass news agency quoted the emergencies ministry as saying 22 people were killed and 55 injured.

The same line was hit by a bomb attack in August, 2007, although nobody was killed.

Islamist guerrillas have sporadically attacked targets outside the north Caucasus region where there are a number of simmering conflicts surrounding Chechnya.
